Experiences Blake - Pappacena/Vezzani
Blake

«Blake was not in any way a philosopher, but he expressed the essentials with a strength or rather
an accuracy that Philosophy can only envy him.»
Georges Bataille
We’ll talk about the visionary poet William Blake through his poems and the pictures of his
famous engravings, considered by him as an inseparable expressive unicum, bringing to
Revelation. We’ll try to give substance to his imaginary world by giving life to his best poems,
thoughts and aphorisms through music, as the poet himself used to sing them and they were
composed to be sung.
Our modern songs took their shape from Blake’s corpora, including Songs of Innocence and of
Experience, The Marriage of Heaven and Hell and The Pickering Manuscript, and almost all of them
have been initially composed for guitar and voice, in order to testify that the complete works of
William Blake don’t fall under the wear and tear of time and it’s now as then beating fast with a
ceaseless truth.
William Blake is a unique poet who lived between the 18th and the 19th Century, labelled as a preromantic
for convenience but practically unclassifiable, besides being a poet and a writer, he
conceived a complex philosophy and an unequivocal mythology which among other things
prevented him from becoming popular. This is why facing Blake’s universe and the uneventful
–but built around one’s self – story of an apparently simple man is so interesting.
We’re talking about a parallel world which comes alive from an endless exploration of a secret
dimension implying the Truth:
The Truth on the outward misery of man, the loss and search for the true meaning of existence, the
voice of a lost childhood which is the cradle of serenity: these are only a few of the topics covered
in such a small number of essential verses. William Blake was persuaded that by undermining our
social as well as religious laws, we can reach a self-awareness which is even capable of alienating
us from pain and death. His gift was never acknowledged as long as he lived, since Blake, against
accommodation, was never interested in the search for assent and thus fell and died into poverty,
and his complete works have been rediscovered almost a Century later.
There is a sentence, in Marriage of Heaven and Hell, which perfectly summarizes his idea of
existence:
«If the doors of perception were cleansed everything would appear to man as it is, Infinite.»
We started from the assumption that during his own life, Blake created a parallel world from an
imaginary universe where man can’t or rather won’t see. In those terms, music seemed to be the
first way to explore that dimension, so we played with estranging tunes that could simply go well
with the text. The two opening male voices double into other two female voices, which reminds us
of the four Zoes that so much troubled the poet.
Blake, who was likely suffering from schizophrenia and hallucinations, would never broke up
with that universe which he himself called Visions. We thought it right to use sounds to outline
different environments but with the same acoustic and soft taste of a folk song blended with the
sharper, synthetic sonorities of electronics.
Our album’s perspective is to shape that inner world moving closer to the dream universe created
by the poet, sometimes just whispered, others even cried out only to be true to the essence of its
grandeur.
Thought as the second part of a unique investigation between sound and poetry, this work follows
up our first attempt to bring music into verses. Our first effort was named Pascoli (2012).
If Giovanni Pascoli was a sound poet, William Blake was a vision poet inseparable from his
engravings, and the music accompanying his words is meant to recall his imagination, extracting
from those pages a substance which is still alive today.
